With young children and animals in tow, two family members in Winnie flee Hurricane Laura, expecting the worst
3 min readWINNIE —The only truck that could haul the RV experienced damaged down two times prior to, so the two households on Big Hill Road were between the past remaining in Winnie just before Hurricane Laura slammed down.
It had damaged down two days ahead of, leaking oil all above the freeway. Travis Fields managed to steer it back again ahead of it broke fully. As the winds picked up, he leaned above the hood and known as out to his spouse for the wrench.

He couldn’t see, he was way too chaotic inspecting the car or truck, but Angela Fields place her palms on her hips and elevated her eyebrows. “That your girlfriend? My name was Angela when I married you.”
Angela and Travis Fields live with their two small children on a house with a barn that even now displays problems from Hurricane Ike on its tin doors. They just moved to Winnie in late June.
“We’re fully expecting to arrive household to nothing at all,” Angela said. “Nothing.”
They reside on the residence with Taylor and Andrew Stewart. They bought married in March. Andrew remembers all the way back to Ike. Taylor’s grandparents’ household was even more up to the highway right before Hurricane Ike. When they arrived again, it was flattened. They don’t have substantial hopes for their mobile residences. (“They’ll shred like Swiss cheese.”)
The Stewarts have an appliance shop set up at the entrance of the property: Washers, dryers, refrigerators all stacked in the vicinity of every single other. They really do not assume to see it all over again. Andrew just received his aquaponics back garden — plants grown from the squander of the fish tank beneath their soil — established up. He figures the fish will go free.
When they get the truck up and functioning, the two family members are evacuating to a hotel in close proximity to Houston’s Interest Airport, with two little ones, a few canines (Anna, Sophie and Coco), a guinea pig and a rat in tow. They’re leaving the goat locked in the barn. She’s good. She’ll climb. If they could take her, they would have. Some horses were remaining guiding in Winnie even much more cows. Angela’s observed posts on Facebook from horse proprietors, begging to borrow a trailer.

Her 6-yr-previous daughter, Blake, wandered about in sun shades and a unicorn nightgown until Angela despatched her to pack. (“It’s your accountability, not mine,” she’d mentioned. Blake walked away, muttering that she’d request her daddy for aid).
As Andrew and Travis worked on the vehicle — Travis perched on the hood, Andrew lying underneath — Taylor secured a little John Deere tractor in the vicinity of the bamboo. Angela turned to go pack up the previous of the dwelling.
“We’re in the final phases now,” Andrew promised.
Angela huffed. “Yeah,” she said. “I been listening to that for about 4 hours now.”
