Marine experts warn people, pets to stay away from seals on the beach. Here’s why

specialists from the Maritime Mammal Stranding Centre are telling
Jersey Shore citizens as seals are much more often observed sleeping
on the beaches.

The
Marine Mammal Stranding Centre is rehabilitating nine seals discovered together the
beach locations. They are pups, only 3 months previous. In about a
thirty day period, they are going to head north and abide by the foodstuff resource. Till then,
they will be seen resting on the seashores. Anybody who sees a seal should stay
again at the very least 150 ft and give the heart a simply call so they can document the
place. Harassing a seal is illegal.
“You
can be fined various thousand dollars,” says Bob Schoelkopf, founding
director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. “They are federally
protected animals. Any individual acquiring much too near, that is viewed as
harassment – or if your pet bites or you chasing animal again
in, which is harassment. If you happen to be caught [on] videotape, like there are so quite a few
individuals with cameras there … you can be fined.”
The
center is receiving all set to launch two of its rehabilitated seals
back again into the ocean next 7 days.
