Kelim's
Red Rain "Rain"

About Rain ...
Rain joined the Braeburn team in August
2005. She was bred by Kim and Kelly Berg of
Kelim Siberians and is co-owned by Elise
McDevitt and Ann and George Cook of
Alkas'iber Siberians. Elise attends college
in Massachusetts. Concerned that Rain would
not get enough exercise or attention, Elise
showed her love for Rain by loaning her to
us for the running season. Rain now lives
with us mid-August – mid-May each year. She
is Alec's and Xandra's niece and cousin to
Asia, Blaze, Jasper and Ace and thus she
really is a member of the family! Siberian
huskies are known for their ability to dig
and to escape and during her first season
with us, Rain proved this over and over
again. She had a great time digging craters
and made Houdini like escapes from the
kennel, never with the purpose of leaving,
just to show us that she could do it and to
let us know that she really preferred to be
in the house. We eventually foiled her and
then she turned her attention to socializing
with the other dogs. |

Having a
reserved nature, this was a slow process,
but eventually she settled into a few good
friendships and into her new life. When she
returned for her second and thirds seasons,
she seemed perfectly content to be reunited
with her Braeburn family. Rain was always
cooperative in harness her first year, but
didn't understand that part of her job was
to actually pull! She improved over the
season, but needed many reminders (maybe she
just didn't want to)! This continued to be
the case halfway through her second season,
when, overnight it seemed, her whole
attitude changed. She became much more
affectionate, requesting snuggles and rubs
instead of waiting for them, and she became
excited at hook up time, waiting patiently
without fussing until she heard the “Let's
go!” command, and then leaning into the
harness, ready to really pull! On our first
runs this season, Rain's third, after a stop
on the trail, when she heard the question
“Everybody ready?” she instantly came to
attention, sometimes even banging into her
harness! Rain is not built for speed, but is
a strong dog with a good work ethic, and so
she has settled into either wheel or team
position to provide pulling power. She has
become a valuable member of the Braeburn
team and has definitely earned the most
improved sled dog award! |
